Plastic pollution has emerged as a pervasive global issue, causing persistent and detrimental impacts across ecosystems, infrastructure, societies, and economies. The gravity of this problem has been underscored by the United Nations’ legally binding international agreement, known as the Plastics Treaty. Recent studies aim to address this challenge by focusing on the creation of emission inventories at both national and international levels to combat plastic pollution.
Cottom and colleagues, in their study, developed an inventory designed to trace the spread of macroplastics in the environment. Their research offers critical insights into the sources of plastic pollution and proposes actionable strategies for local governments to mitigate its impact. Furthermore, they explored the ecological harm caused by plastics transported to oceans and seas via rivers, highlighting waste collection inefficiencies as a primary driver of pollution.
Their study, which examined plastic waste emissions at the municipal level across 50,702 regions, revealed that approximately 52.1 million tons of macroplastic waste were released into the environment in 2020. Of this, 57% was burned in open areas, while 43% stemmed from improperly discarded waste. The open burning of plastics poses significant health risks to humans and severe threats to ecosystems.
The regions most affected by plastic pollution are concentrated in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa, where rapid population growth and inadequate waste management have exacerbated the issue. India, producing 9.3 million tons of plastic waste annually, ranks as the largest contributor to global plastic pollution. While pollution in developed countries primarily results from improper waste disposal behaviors, in developing nations, the lack of waste collection infrastructure is a key factor. The researchers emphasize that the most effective strategies for addressing plastic pollution involve reducing waste generation at its source and enhancing recycling systems. These approaches are deemed essential for mitigating both forms of pollution.
To curb the spread of plastic waste on a global scale, the development of comprehensive, globally coordinated solutions is crucial. Protecting riverbanks and coastlines is identified as a vital measure to safeguard ecosystems and local populations from the adverse effects of plastic pollution. Additionally, the compounded impact of plastic pollution and climate change poses even greater environmental risks.
In conclusion, this research provides valuable data to governments and local authorities, informing the development of effective waste management strategies. The monitoring of plastic emissions is emphasized as a necessary step for the successful implementation of measures under the Plastics Treaty. A multidisciplinary approach is deemed essential for fostering a cleaner environment and preventing future pollution.
